Getting Your Car Out Of The Snow

When the winter season is approaching, it's about time to "winterize" your car and make some preparation to prevent getting stuck in deep snow when driving. Here are a few reminders in case you encounter such an unfortunate situation this winter:

• When you get stuck in snow, evaluate any possible damage and check all your passengers. Get out of your car and inspect it for damage. If there appears to be a serious problem, you must not try to get out yourself. Instead, call a towing service company.
• To prevent further accidents, turn on your hazard lights. This will let other drivers know that you need help.
• If you get hung up on a snow drift, don't push the pedal immediately. This will only create an icy surface under the tire, making it more difficult to dislodge your vehicle. It is advised that you put you car in reverse before tapping on the gas. Continue doing this until your vehicle gets the needed momentum to roll out of the snow.
• As much as possible, have someone push from behind when rocking forward.
• If you have tried rocking the car several times but it's not coming loose, get an old blanket or board. Dig out the snow around and push the blanket or board underneath your tires. To get enough momentum, drive onto these things.
• To make the task even easier, ask someone to pull your vehicle out with a towing equipment or a winch.
